Synth Pioneer Bob Moog Dead At 71

The latest in a rash of musical losses (including Southern Records founder John Loder, who died last week at 59), synth groundbreaker Robert Moog succumbed to brain cancer Sunday afternoon. The 71-year-old Moog, who was diagnosed in April and had been receiving chemotherapy regularly, could be described as one of electronic music's chief forbearers—his squiggly, versatile Moog synthesizers, incomparable when they arrived in the mid-60s, redefined music and instrumentation for an entire generation of musicians. Revered by giants like the Beatles and Dick Hyman and younger groups like Stereolab and the Get Up Kids, Moog will be sorely missed.
