million-year wars start because of religion - or in his case "scientology".

"Where would R&B, rap and hip-hop be if groups like Parliament-Funkadelic hadn’t used Moog keyboards?"

My first exposure to the development of Maynard was through 8-track tapes!
My dad gave them to me - we had an AIWA 8-track 2/4 recorder/player* (which I still
have in working mint condition) to play them on. Of course, we would
soon buy more 8-track
cartridge tapes, but MF Horns 4 & 5, a double album as sold only in
the 8-track version I believe, was the first and best live recording released on
8-track - and it
was Maynard after all!
The first time I saw him live would have been at what was once called Hawthorne Shopping Center, Vernon Hills, IL. outdoors at one of the purposely closed off entrances - near what is now called John's Garage. Unfortunately that is also where I first and last met Bob Sarat**, but that short unpleasantness soon passed with Stan Mark's first notes, heralding the Music of Maynard.
My first musical exposure to Maynard was while playing drums for the College of Lake County's Jazz Band under the direction of Chuck Banks or Don Perilles or most likely Bruce Mack on his 1st or 2nd year (I do not recall who was directing the CLC Jazz Band then) in 1976, ''77 or ''78 as a warm-up act to Maynard's band. We were set up in front of his band's gear in the Main Lobby, lowest level (now called, "The Focal Point"), and we played well. Maynard loved us - probably because our lead trumpet, Rex Meriwether (see also), was playing one of Maynard's horns! Gary Gand & Jeff Check did the "house" and monitor mixes while CLC A/V dept's Chris K., Don Drake and Dave "Nik". accomplished all lighting requirements (borrowing from the Auditorium!)

The Music of Maynard Ferguson :
"What can be said about
Maynard Ferguson that hasn't already been said?
He's amazing, and so was the music from his "Birdland Dream Band" of the late
50's and early 60's. " ....... Bob Curnow
*What is a 2/4 recorder/player? Well, in 8-track land, this puppy will record each of the 4 recordable stereo sections called "programs" one at a time (stopping just before looping) or in sequence 1 through 4 (then stopping at the end of "program 4), but it could play 2 sets of programs at a time, either program 1 and 2 or 3 and 4, and it could monitor either program 1 or 2 for the other OR 3 or 4 for the other not being recorded to, while recording IN SYNC on the other. This way you could record yourself once on program 1, then keep recording on 3 all while listening to program 2 then 4, then play along on guitar or whatever while recording alongside on the remaining open unrecorded programs! Home - multi-track recording before the first TEAC 4-track reel-to-reels were released! After all, although the rear panel had only rca jacks for connection to a 4-channel receiver (the 4 channel vinyls came first, this was the reason for the 4-track recorded, as before the RIAA became paranoid, the home recordist could copy his , then, discrete 4 channel vinyl discs to the 4 channel 8-track cartridge !), their of course were 2 front panel, 1/4", 2-conductor, hi-impedance microphone jacks for this recording purpose.
There was another company not much later that made an 8-track consumer recorder/player with the capability to record as 8 mono tracks - you could record program 1, left channel, then play it back and record on program 1, 2, 3, or 4 RIGHT channel - this prevented cross-talk. The manufacturer was NOT TEAC or TASCAM but was a pro-sumer competitor of theirs - possibly REVOX or VESTAX?
**If you Google "Bob Sarat" in the quotes, you will find basically nothing.
